Redemption for Choquette, coronation for Ruffin

Jeff Choquette is used to putting his car in victory lane at New Smyrna. Last night, in the first night of the World Series of Asphalt, he was denied.

Choquette finished sixth after having to climb from the 14th starting spot in the Super Late Model race. After Saturday night's dominating performance, color him a 2008 World Series winner.

Choquette, a DSM 75 prospect out of Palm Beach, Fla., thumped the field in the 30-lapper, leading every lap. Friday night winner Tim Russell finished second, followed by Ryan Sieg.

Wauchula, Fla. three-star prospect B.J. McLeod was running fourth before he was punted by Jack Landis just after the halfway mark. McLeod's car was irreparable. Landis was penalized and then pulled off the track.

13 year-old Logan Ruffin marched to an easy win in the Crate Late Model division. The evening served as a coming-out party for the Brentwood, Tenn. native who pulled away from the lead pack on a final re-start with six laps to go to secure the victory.

Will Thomas, Earl Beckner, David Wagner, and A.J. Fulgenzi rounded out the top five.

Daytona Beach, Fla. two-star Chad Akins scored his second-straight win, executing a bump-and-run on Drew Brannon on the last lap of the Limited Late Model race. Brannon saved his car from a potential wreck but lost three spots, settling for a fourth place finish.

J.R. McMichael finished second, while Derrick Kelley finished third.

In modified action, Jimmy Blewett took wins in both the Tour-type division and the SK division.

Night #3 action kicks off tomorrow at 7:30 pm EDT. Coverage of the nine-day event continues on davidsmithmotorsports.com.
